Resident experience surveys return
The annual face-to-face appraisal of how older people feel about their aged care home informs a service’s star rating and areas for improvement.

The Resident Experience Survey has opened for 2025, with older Australians again given the opportunity to talk about their experience of living in an aged care home.
The survey is conducted face-to-face with residents by an independent third party on behalf of the department, as previous feedback indicated participants – and their families and carers – preferred to share with someone not directly related to their care.
Introduced in response to recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, the results inform an aged care homes’ Star Rating, and aim to help providers identify areas for improvement in their services.
HealthConsult and Access Care Network Australia have been conducting the 2024 and 2025 surveys, which involved trained surveyors asking participating residents 14 questions that cover:
- staff knowledge
- communication
- quality care
- food
- ways a residential aged care home can improve
Responses are anonymous and any identifying information is kept strictly confidential.
The combined results are made publicly available.
Participation is voluntary and residents at each home are selected randomly so that every resident has an equal opportunity to have their say.
More information is available here.
In the 2022-23 round of the survey almost 75,000 people were interviewed, and a summary of the findings can be found here.
