Aged care teacher to give international lesson

A Queensland aged educator will be presenting at an international geriatrics conference next month.

A Brisbane aged care teacher has been selected to present at the prestigious Geriatrics World Congress in Paris next month.

Southbank Institute of Technology’s Aged Care Coordinator, Suzanne Meehan will be talking about the organisation’s specialised training programs.

With nearly half a century of experience in aged care, Ms Meehan developed Southbank’s allied health care assistant courses in podiatry, physiotherapy and occupational therapy after her research showed an urgent need for qualified workers in those fields.

“It will be extremely rewarding to let other aged care professionals from around the world know about our efforts here in Brisbane and the training we offer at the Institute to truly benefit older people,” Ms Meehan said.

Ms Meehan also plans to introduce new Southbank courses in the additional areas of speech therapy and dietetics.

“These are all areas which are experiencing staff shortages and the demand for aged care workers will only increase,” Ms Meehan said.

“It will be wonderful to showcase these courses and our knowledge in the field of aged care on the world stage.”

Southbank Institute Director and CEO Craig Sherrin said Ms Meehan was at the forefront of her industry and had much to teach international aged care experts.

“Sue has used her extensive experience in the industry to identify real life needs and she has been proactive in meeting those needs with some exceptional training courses,” Mr Sherrin said.
