Diaries at the ready- 11 May
A regular fortnightly reminder of upcoming dates for your diary, calendar or wall planner.
Here are some important conferences, deadlines to note and useful notices. You’ll find the details on how to enquire about all the events in the full list at the bottom of this news item:
- International Nurses Day (IND)- Join with the millions around the world in celebrating the contribution that nurses make to society on Thursday 12 May. Marking the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, this year’s IND will be themed ‘Closing The Gap: Increasing Access and Equity’. Keep an eye out for a local event near you. Or, click here for details.
- The Australian Nursing Federation (Victorian Branch) has announced that the Federal Member for Melbourne, Adam Bandt, will visit Gregory Lodge aged care facility on IND. While there, he will sign the ANF’s Because We Care pledge in support of better aged care for all older Australians. Mr Bandt will be the first Victorian federal MP to put his mark to the pledge and the ANF hopes that more politicians will follow.
- National Volunteer Week (NVW) will wind up this Sunday 15 May. The largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, NVW provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you. Older people and aged care organisations play a special part in volunteer activities and in turn, contribute significantly to the health and welfare of Australia, as well as economic activity. - Alzheimer’s Australia 14th National Conference, 17-20 May; Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre
- Aged Care Association Australia NSW Congress 2011, 19-20 May; Sheraton on the Park, Sydney
- National Palliative Care Week 2011 will run from Sunday 22 May to Saturday 28 May. The theme may be confronting, ‘Chat about dying’, but the point of the week is to encourage conversations about death so that society can eventually realise quality end of life care for all Australians. - Retirement Living World China 2011, 24-27 May; Beijing
- The ACCV Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner will be held on Thursday 9 June at the The Sebel Albert Park Melbourne, Grand Ballroom from 6.30pm (event officially starts at 7pm). The event host will be radio announcer for 3AW, David Mann. Members are encouraged to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Victoria’s aged care industry at this annual event. Click here to register to attend.
- This week, Alzheimer’s Australia was chosen to take part in the Commonwealth Bank’s new Community Seeds Facebook campaign, which will raise money for Alzheimer’s research. To be involved, all you have to do is to go on Facebook, click on Community Seeds (www.facebook.com/commonwealthbank) and vote for Alzheimer’s Australia. By doing this, the organisation will receive a donation from Commonwealth Bank’s community program. One vote = $1 and you can only vote once. The charity with the most votes by the end of the campaign will also receive an additional $20,000. The more friends you get to vote through your Facebook the better chance you have at winning an extra $5,000 for your charity and $5,000 for yourself. To do this, once you have voted, you must agree to share the link on your Facebook so that your friends are able to follow the link direct from your Facebook to vote.
Remember to get organised well in advance for overseas events, like Retirement Living World China in Beijing next month, as mentioned above. Australian speakers include Kevin Ryan, Managing Director of Waterbrook Lifestyle Resorts and Kimberly Talbot, CEO of the Richmond Club & Hawkesbury Living. Click here for details
The International Federation on Ageing (IFA) will hold its next global conference in Prague, Czech Republic, from 28 May to 1 June, 2012. Organisers aim to provide a forum where attendees can learn, discuss and influence age-related policy and practice around the world. Click here for more information.
And if you’re thinking about popping over to Washington DC in October for the IAHSA conference, you should be checking out dates and details now. Click here to go to the IAHSA conference website or see the full listing at the end of this news item.
