Home care provider launches active ageing campaign

A new website offers tips on how seniors can stay fit, active and engaged.

Australia’s seniors are being challenged to exercise more as part of a national campaign run by Home Instead Senior Care.

The Get Mum Moving campaign urges adult children to encourage their older parents to remain fit, active and engaged.

A key feature of the campaign is a new website with simple exercises for seniors a list of resources on healthy ageing.

The owner of Home Instead Senior Care Adelaide, Mark McBriarty, said the campaign was established because many seniors find it challenging to stay physically active.

“One of the greatest fears of older people is losing their independence,” he said. “This can become an unfortunate reality when a lack of activity leads to poor health resulting in frailty.”

“We regularly see seniors who are literally trapped in their homes because they are too weak to perform many of the activities they need to remain safe and independent. That’s why staying active is viewed by so many as vital to healthy ageing.”

The exercises on the Get Mum Moving website can be incorporated into the daily lives of older Australians.
“Seniors don’t need to join a gym to stay fit; many of the exercises we recommend can be done in the comfort of their own home,” said Mr McBriarty.

“Simple leg strengthening exercises like leg stretches or leg curls can be performed on a chair, while a tennis ball can be used to perform power grips.  Other activities like gardening or a daily walk to the shops are also very simple and fun to do.”
