Minister slams home
Caustic soda poisoning was “sheer stupidity” according to Justine Elliot.
The Victorian nursing home where four residents were hospitalised after ingesting caustic soda has come under fire from the Federal Government.
The Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot has ordered the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency to conduct a full audit of the Edgarley Hostel in Casterton, describing the event as “sheer stupidity”.
It is believed that a saucepan containing caustic soda paste was left on the stove and was allegedly served to residents by a kitchen staff member at the facility on 4 June.
“The Victorian Police were notified and investigated and will not be pursuing criminal charges in relation to this matter,” said Mrs Elliot.
“I can advise that the two kitchen staff members involved in the incident have been stood down.”
All four residents have now returned to the facility.
“This can only be described as a stupid and unacceptable incident,” the Minister said.
Aged and Community Care Victoria (ACCV) CEO, Gerard Mansour expressed his regret to the residents of Edgarley, along with their families.
“I wish to acknowledge it was a difficult time for all involved, especially the
residents, families and staff,” said Mr Mansour.
He said that as far as he was aware, the home had apologised personally to all the people affected by the incident and was working to address the issue.
“Our member acted decisively to inform and co-operate with all authorities and we have been advised there are no on-going health issues affecting residents,” Mr Mansour said.
“The provider is acting promptly in reviewing procedures, conduct staff training and engaged external specialist advice.”
