More than statistics

Ageing Minister, Justine Elliot has celebrated Carers Week by launching the ‘Face of Care’ photographic exhibition at Old Parliament House in Canberra. The exhibition contains photographs of carers and their loved ones around the country.

This year’s theme for Carers Week is ‘Anyone Anytime across Australia’, highlighting that carers come from every walk of life.

Close to 2.6 million Australians care for a family member or friend and 500,000 of them are primary carers.

“The statistics don’t show the human face behind the figures,” said Mrs Elliot. “The powerful images in this exhibition portray dedication, trust and a sense of unconditional love.

“The exhibition allows us a brief insight into their lives to give us a glimpse of what it means to be a carer. They are just some of the millions of stories of courageous individuals providing care each and every day.”

The CEO of Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA), Greg Mundy agreed that numbers fail to convey the extent of the contribution made by carers.

“These statistics are crucial for planning ahead to provide optimum care and services, but [they are] not always the best means of conveying a message about real people, people just like you and me,” he said.

“Carers Week is an opportunity to stop and take notice of the very real people who make such a difference in so many lives.”

Mr Mundy added that ACSA’s “Can’t do it without you” campaign was also emphasising the care and support provided to older Australians.

“Aged care professionals also provide respite care for carers and their families, or friends, in addition to supporting elderly people in residential facilities or in their own homes,” he said.

“However, there is an issue with the falling hours of care provided by professional carers.”
