Australia recognises legacy of Paul Johnson

The team at aged care provider BallyCara remember their colleague as a selfless and passionate advocate for positive ageing and are thrilled his dedication has been recognised.

The late Paul Johnson, former chief operating officer of BallyCara, was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to aged welfare. He was one of 732 Australians honoured on 26 January.

Mr Johnson spent a decade working for BallyCara, a charitable organisation which provides home care, wellness, short-term restorative care, retirement living and residential care services nation-wide.

Mr Johnson was also a former board member for Aged and Disability Advocacy – an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and improving the wellbeing of older Australians and people with disabilities.

He is remembered by BallyCara colleague and executive chairman Marcus Riley as a selfless figure in the aged care sector who worked tirelessly to encourage positive ageing, advocating for people to have choices no matter what stage of life they were at, promoting lifelong learning and advocating for staff.

Mr Riley told Australian Ageing Agenda that Paul undertook his work with immense passion and that he was elated the impactful work Mr Johnson did for the sector and directly with the community during his two decade-long career was being recognised at such a high level.

“People are absolutely thrilled that Paul’s work has been recognised and that there’ll be support for his legacy to live on,” he told AAA.

“The family is very proud and very excited that he’s been recognised in this way and obviously in particular Paul’s children… To see the impact that their father had, and as I said before, that his impact and legacy very much lives on, and he continues to inspire people.”

BallyCara is also in the process of confirming some initiatives that will recognise Mr Johnson in perpetuity from the organisation’s perspective, he said.
