Groundbreaking falls program wins agency award

BallyCara is only the second Queensland provider to win a Better Practice award from the agency.

Queensland provider BallyCara Aged Care Community has won a Better Practice Award from the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency for a groundbreaking falls prevention program.

It is only the second Queensland aged care organisation to receive such an award.

Since the Active, Independent and Upright program was introduced in February 2007, the number of falls throughout the BallyCara organisation has reduced by 50 per cent.

The innovative program involves organised exercise plans, regulated sun exposure for vitamin D, medication reviews and practical measures such as advice on safe footwear.

The organisation’s CEO Marcus Riley said a key to the program’s success was the high level of participation and commitment across the BallyCara organisaiton.

“It’s great to have the efforts of management and staff recognised on a national stage,” he said.

“It has filled the team with pride because that recognition is something they fully deserved.”

The Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot praised the organisation when she formally presented the award.

“Cutting falls by 50 per cent would reduce the number of deaths and injuries; this program makes a real difference,” she said.

“It is a real tribute to the staff, managements, residents and family. “

Mr Riley said BallyCara plans to keep setting high standards in aged care.

“We don’t see accreditation and awards as finish lines in themselves,” he said.

“We have established a platform now to achieve special things. I think we have an opportunity to be a national leader in delivering aged care services.”
