Nominations for the 2009 Senior Australian of the Year close at the end of the month.

The annual award is designed to recognise the achievements and contributions of Australian citizens over the age of 60.

“Older Australians have so much to offer,” said the Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot as she issued a call for nominations.

“For example, volunteering builds social capital within communities and makes Australia a stronger country in which to live, and the voluntary work that many of our senior Australians do really is invaluable.”

Past recipients of the Senior Australian of the Year award include international aid worker David Bussau, disability mentor Phillip Herreen, Indigenous nurse and mentor Sally Goold and country singer Slim Dusty.

State and Territory finalists will be announced towards the end of the year and the winner of the Senior Australian of the Year will be revealed just before Australia Day next year.
