Quality regulator appoints chief clinical advisor

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission has appointed geriatric medicine specialist Dr Melanie Wroth as its first full-time chief clinical advisor.

Dr Melanie Wroth

Dr Wroth, who has been involved in medical care for older Australians since 1990, has been a senior staff specialist in geriatric medicine at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and involved in teaching clinical geriatric medicine since 2010.

As the commission’s chief clinical advisor, she will provide expert clinical advice to commission staff and assist aged care providers to source and access guidance on best practice clinical care for people receiving aged care services.

Aged Care Quality and Safety Commissioner Janet Anderson said Dr Wroth’s appointment came at an important time as the sector prepared for the introduction of the new quality standards and charter of rights from 1 July.

She said Dr Wroth would also work with the sector to raise awareness of clinical issues and areas of high risk in aged care and promote better practice.

“This will include leading and supporting engagement with key stakeholders, with a particular focus on communicating with aged care providers, health professionals and peak bodies representing both providers and consumers,” Ms Anderson said.

Dr Wroth will commence at the commission on 10 May. She will take over from associate professor Michael Murray, who has been part-time interim chief clinical advisor since the commission was established in January.

FECCA appoints CEO

National peak body for Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia has appointed Mohammad Al-Khafaji as CEO.

Mr Al-Khafaji had been acting CEO of FECCA since November following the resignation of former CEO Dr Emma Campbell.

Mohammad Al-Khafaji

Mr Al-Khafaji has held a number of roles at the organisation including as youth chairperson and honorary secretary on the FECCA executive before joining the FECCA secretariat as the director of strategy and engagement.

Prior to joining FECCA, Mr Al-Khafaji was the inaugural CEO of Welcome to Australia, a social and learning activity organisation for migrants of Australia.

Mr Al-Khafaji said he was excited to permanently take on the FECCA CEO at a critical time for CALD Australians.

“This is a very challenging time for Australians from diverse backgrounds, as we all work together to ensure that Australian values of a just and fair society prevail,” Mr Al-Khafaji said.
