Uniting has lodged plans with Parramatta City Council for the redevelopment of a combined independent living, aged care and community precinct at its Coombah facility in Epping, New South Wales.

The new proposal includes an 83-bed residential care facility and 152 independent retirement living units and offers one, two and three bedroom accommodation. Residents will also have access to a range of social, health and wellness care services.

Uniting property and housing director Simon Furness said the development is in response to the needs of the local community.

“This design is in response to the need for quality aged care and affordable housing in the local community,” Mr Furness told Australian Ageing Agenda.

The facility will feature a café, grocery store and garden rooftop area open to residents and their families and friends.

“The design has been carefully planned to create a real community connecting people throughout the building.

“It provides a range of community facilities to bring people together and foster a strong sense of connection,” Mr Furness said.

Jewish Care Victoria to sell community residence

Mark and Dina Munzer Community Residence for sale

Victorian-based aged care provider Jewish Care Victoria has announced its community residence at Caulfield North will be up for sale.

The 3683 square metre site has remained vacant since the closure of the Mark and Dina Munzer Community Residence in March 2017.

Jewish Care Victoria CEO Bill Appleby said the provider has consulted experts in the industry to explore potential use for the site.

“Following comprehensive analysis, we have determined that the property is surplus to both the short and long-term needs of Jewish Care and the sale of the property is the most prudent course of action,” Mr Appleby said.

Napier Street celebrates 25th birthday

Napier Street facility

Victorian-based aged care provider Napier Street Aged Care Services celebrates its 25th birthday.

The facility opened in 1993 with a total of 42 beds, 26 of which were concessional. After two weeks of its opening, every bed was occupied. Napier Street Aged Care Services is now a 62-bed facility with on-going palliative care available.

Napier Street Aged Care Services board chair Frank O’Connor said the future of the facility had been up in the air for nearly 15 years after the building fell into disrepair but it has since been given a new lease of life.

“Napier Street has survived despite the odds because it has been community orientated and supported, has good staffing policies, strong leadership and doesn’t exist to generate profits and shareholders,” Mr O’Connor said.

ACSA announces group membership

Aged care peak body Aged and Community Services Australia and aged care provider Presbyterian Care Australia have announced a membership agreement.

Presbyterian Care Australia CEO Paul Sadler said the agreement aimed to boost cooperation on critical areas of policy development and combine two voices in the aged care sector.

“The aged care sector is undergoing significant change and this agreement enables two strong voices to combine their influence and expertise to bring those to issues to public attention,” Mr Sadler said.

ACSA CEO Pat Sparrow said the membership would work to strengthen its voice on the important issues in the sector including sustainable funding and ensuring older Australians continue to have a voice on their care preferences and services.

The membership agreement commenced on 1 July.
