Melbourne’s newest aged care facility has been officially opened by Victoria’s Health Minister, Daniel Andrews and the Member for Melbourne, Bronwyn Pike.

Mercy Place Parkville is a 140-bed residential aged care service providing low care, high care, specialist dementia care and extra services accommodation.

The new facility is part of a ‘continuing care community’ on the site of the 2006 Commonwealth Games village.

The multi-storey site also includes 52 retirement living apartments and a central community hub.

The hub will be a focus for community activity with a chapel, a café, a hairdressing salon and a convenience store.

Mercy Health CEO, John Ballard said the Parkville facility played an important role in the organisation’s commitment to meeting the needs of older Australians.

“Increasingly we are hearing about the challenges that an ageing population presents to the community,” said Mr Ballard.

“Mercy Health has recognised this growing need for aged care and we are committed to a program of growth which now sees us operating over 1,000 residential aged care beds and an expanding array of home and community-based care services.”

The project was made possible with the support of the City of Melbourne, the Victorian Government and the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.

This week Mercy Health also opened a new 65-bed facility in Warnambool and completed the first stage of a redevelopment project at its 110-bed facility in Wyndham.
