Community care workers are being encouraged to participate in a series of free webinars and online learning modules aimed at building their knowledge of advance care planning and end-of-life care.

The webinars, commencing this month, are based on the Decision Assist program’s aged care training workshops and cover the areas of pain management, communication at the end of life and recognising a deteriorating client.

Webinar one: Untreated pain

In this webinar, community care workers will increase their understanding of the prevalence of pain for a person with dementia and learn tools to identify and assess pain in clients.

This webinar will be held on 27 April and will be presented by Stephen Gibson, director of National Ageing Research Institute’s (NARI) clinical research division; Benny Katz, director of geriatric medicine at St Vincent’s hospital and Annmarie Hosie, registered nurse and early career researcher with expertise in palliative and aged care. Webinar two: Communication at the end of life

This webinar focuses on communicating with family members around death and dying and will assist staff to develop an increased awareness of the psycho-social support needs of family members at the end of life.

Webinar three: Recognising the deteriorating client

This webinar targeted at community aged care staff will increase their knowledge of the key clinical indications of the deteriorating client.

Decision Assist has also introduced a series of self-paced eLearning modules offering an introduction to the palliative approach and advance care planning for staff in community aged care.

Staff will receive a certificate at the completion of the online modules.
