Sharing good practice on supporting diverse communities

A set of new resources has been developed to build the capacity of Commonwealth Home Support Program providers to deliver inclusive and person-centred care.

The free resources have been produced by the EMR Alliance’s Eastern Sector Development Team in Melbourne to promote best practice in creating welcoming, inclusive and individualised services within home support programs.

Building capacity of CHSP providers to create inclusive services

The Connecting the Pieces short video and companion guide addresses the interrelationship between diversity, inclusive access and person-centred care. The facilitator’s guide includes reflective questions and case studies to facilitate discussion on key topics among staff and volunteers.

Help sheets have also been developed in conjunction with the Centre for Culture Ethnicity and Health to support mainstream social support groups to be culturally inclusive. The help sheets cover topics such as language and culture, partnerships and engaging staff and volunteers. A consultation report based on interviews with support workers and social support group coordinators is also available.

Connecting through Inclusive Communication Practices is a guide for CHSP providers on the use of inclusive, person-centred language and communication when engaging with current and potential consumers.

The resource contains information, good practice examples and practical tools for providers to use with staff, volunteers and consumers when developing new communication material or when reviewing existing communication material. The resource also includes a communication and language checklist.

The resources and tools are available to download via the EMR Alliance website.
