Aged care’s palliative care evidence and practice resource centre has developed two new resources to help aged care nurses and care workers provide quality end-of-life care to residents.

The Practice Tip Sheets have been developed by palliAGED, the national care evidence and practice resource project managed by CareSearch at Flinders University.

The evidence-based resources have been designed to support care workers and nurses working in both residential and home aged care in providing quality care for older people at the end of life.

They cover 29 commonly encountered issues such as:

  • dementia
  • palliative care
  • wound and skin management
  • nutrition
  • hydration.

CareSearch director Professor Jennifer Tieman said the resources provided easy-to-find information to help the aged care sector.

“Care workers and nurses can find it hard to source useful actionable information to help them care for residents and home care clients who are approaching the end of life. These Practice Tip Sheets fill this gap,” said Professor Tieman.

“These sheets will be an invaluable resource for aged care as they provide clear and direct information for nurses and care workers about common care issues found at the end of life,” she said.

The practice tip sheets include easy-to-read discussion of:

  • what the issue is
  • pointers on what to do and the tools to use
  • questions to prompt reflection and review.

In addition to supporting the delivery of care, the tip sheets are also a valuable resource for in-house training or individual professional development material, Professor Tieman said.

Like all palliAGED resources, the Practice Tip Sheets have been reviewed by experts in aged care, palliative care and evidence to ensure its rigour and suitability to contemporary aged care in Australia, she said.
