Resthaven’s largesse continues

The SA provider is celebrating its 75th anniversary by providing scholarships to nursing students.

South Australian provider Resthaven is continuing to celebrate its 75th anniversary by giving to others.

The aged care group which began operating in 1935 will supply 10 scholarships to full time nursing students at the University of Adelaide.

The scholarships will be available from 2011 and are open to undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students.

The undergraduate scholarships are valued at $10,000 each and the postgraduate scholarships are $5,000 each.

The CEO of Resthaven, Richard Hearn said his organisation’s 75th anniversary provided an opportunity to celebrate and affirm the work of its staff, volunteers, clients and carers.

“We are excited to provide eight undergraduate and two postgraduate scholarships for students in their second and final year of nursing at the University of Adelaide over the period 2011-2014.”

The head of the University of Adelaide’s Discipline of Nursing, Professor Alison Kitson said the scholarships will help ensure that the State’s older people are given the best possible care by highly qualified professionals.

“South Australia has the oldest population in the country, with almost 16 per cent of the State’s residents aged 65 or older,” Professor Kitson said.

“Trends indicate that in the next 25 years this sector will grow three times as fast as the younger population, so it’s imperative we attract excellent students into aged care nursing.”

Resthaven has also provided similar scholarships to nursing students at the University of South Australia and Flinders University.

Earlier this year the provider announced a series of grants for small charitable and not-for-profit groups as part of its anniversary celebrations.
