SA provider unveils ‘hidden’ village
The Hillside Gardens apartments have been designed with the broader community in mind.
Masonic Homes has lifted the lid on a ‘hidden’ retirement community in the Adelaide Hills.
The Hillside Gardens community is the largest residential development in the Adelaide Hills but it has been designed to have a minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
The 24 one- and two- bedroom units are located in a tree-lined valley adjoining an extra service aged care facility.
Masonic Homes’ CEO, Doug Strain said most people who drive past it wouldn’t even know it was there.
“There is a major need for this kind of independent retirement housing in the Adelaide Hills, but we also set out from the outset to design a building that would not impose on its neighbours and would be kind to the environment,” he said.
The new apartments feature open-plan living areas, contemporary kitchens, and a broad range of technical features, from designer appliances to Internet connections and satellite TV.
They also include special design features such as wheelchair-friendly corridors, automatic doors, raised power-points and maintenance free kitchen bench tops.
“These apartments are ideal for active seniors who want to continue leading independent and mobile lifestyles, but without any of the concern and hard work of maintaining a family home or a large garden,” Mr Strain said.
