Training for retaining

Eight staff members from Victorian provider TLC Aged Care who completed a unique business management course have been recognised in a graduation ceremony.

The Diploma of Business (Frontline Management) was specifically developed for TLC’s clinical and administrative staff by learning and development organisation, Business Training.

“We have always tried to commit as much as we can to education but this was a different sort of step to what we had previously done,” said TLC Director, Jenny Leaper.

“It’s a diploma of business and its focus is on broader business and management skills.”

The course has been specifically tailored for the aged care industry to help staff adjust to new demands in an increasingly complex industry.

“While the content is applicable to most businesses, all the examples, assignments and readings have been tailored to aged care,” said Ms Leaper. “That’s why I think it has been so successful.”

Ms Leaper said the extended training opportunity was part of the organisation’s commitment to improving retention in a tight labour market.

“We know that unless we commit as much as we can to improving career opportunities within our organisation, we won’t be able to retain our good workers,” she said.

“We want to show them that we are willing to put a lot of effort into helping them improve their skills.”
