UnitingCare focuses on indigenous employment

Mary Day is UnitingCare Ageing’s first ever Indigenous Employment Officer

Uniting Care Ageing has created a new position to increase its capacity to deliver culturally appropriate care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

As the group’s inaugural Indigenous Employment Officer, Mary Day will work to ensure that two per cent of the UnitingCare NSW.ACT workforce is made up of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people.

Part of Ms Day’s role will to provide ongoing assistance and training to indigenous employees to help them progress with their careers.

She also intends to establish a cultural awareness program for all UnitingCare Ageing employees, which will be delivered in a series of interactive sessions.

Ms Day is currently the Chairperson of the Lagaw Kodo Mir Torres Strait Islander Corporation Resource and Culture Centre in NSW.

She has previously worked for the state’s Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal and the office of Fair Trading.

In the new role, she is looking forward to combining her professional skills and experience with her passion for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community.

“I am excited about the opportunities this role presents and look forward to the new challenges that face me”, she said.

Earlier this year UnitingCare NSW.ACT signed an agreement with the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations to commit to being a leader in indigenous employment.
