The recent 2021-22 Budget revealed that of the 148 recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, most would be implemented. The Government also announced $17.7 billion would be spent to carry out significant aged care reform over the next five years.

Michael Donnelly, Head of Aged & Disability at Telstra Health, has been following the announcements closely. “This is an exciting and challenging time for aged care providers and I’m acutely aware they will need supportive electronic systems to meet the incoming changes,” said Michael. “Workforce challenges and greater reporting requirements will drive the need for holistic solutions that automate functions and reduce data entry.”

Digital solutions supporting Royal Commission recommendations

Telstra Health’s residential aged care software suite comprises an integrated digital care and electronic medication management system with My Health Record interoperable functionality, as per some of the Royal Commission recommendations. With additional family communication and funding and resident management tools, the solution is well suited to supporting providers as they navigate an increasingly digitally led and transparency focused sector.

Work is already underway to further enhance the suite in light of the changes announced in the May Budget. New forms have been introduced to help providers capture serious incidents and mirror the assessments taking place as part of the Australian National Aged Care Classification
(AN-ACC) trial.

Medication management functionality is being enhanced to allow GPs serving residential aged care to update a resident’s medication chart electronically. An upcoming icon-led mobile point-of-care delivery tool will enable the tracking of direct care per day, while reporting enhancements will be made to support the announced National Quality Indicators and Hospital Transfer Summary Report changes.

Committed to Australian aged care providers

Choosing the right software partner is vital in this fast-paced environment. Michael explained that providers need to consider not only whether the software is right for their business now and into the future, but also whether the vendor shares the same overall priorities: an Australian-market focus, a passion for innovation, scalability and security, and a strong base of high-quality support and training.

As an Australian owned and operated business, Telstra Health is investing heavily to support Australian aged care providers to meet the changing industry landscape. “We work very closely with our clients, so we know how important it is that we do whatever we can to simplify and streamline processes so they can spend more time focused on care delivery and less time on administration,” said Michael.

Holistic solutions for all of aged care

For community aged care providers, the next five years will see 80,000 additional Home Care Packages and a new support at home program rolled out across the country.

With a rapid growth in services imminent, providers are turning to electronic workforce and care recipient solutions to manage the load.

“Creating efficiencies and having a high level of workforce visibility is key for community aged care providers right now.” said Michael.

“Our next-generation Community Connect software has been designed to help reduce the time spent rostering and scheduling, while our mobile app enables workers to deliver high quality care and support on the go – while sending all that essential data back to staff in the office.”

“We’re on track to create one digital platform across the community aged care, independent living, respite and residential aged care space, so that one record will follow the care recipient at every step of their journey,” said Michael. “We’re committed to keep investing not just to meet the Royal Commission and Budget changes, but to meet the needs of providers well into the future.”
