App update makes medication management easier for carers

NPS Medicine Wise has updated its medication tracking app so it can be used by carers and healthcare workers who are looking after more than one person.
The MedicineWise app stores medicine lists, schedules reminders and keeps track of when medicines are taken.
The update, which has been funded by the NSW government, means that carers who are looking after more than one person can keep details of multiple individuals in the one app.
Meanwhile, people who have more than one carer can share details with multiple people.
“The latest update means the app is now suitable for multiple carers and professional healthcare workers who are caring for multiple people,” NPS Medicinewise CEO Steve Morris said in a statement.
“This way, all carers can be sure that no medicine has been forgotten or given twice.”
“Caring for others is no easy feat, and more than half of primary carers provide care for at least 20 hours per week, often supported by others, so we wanted to ensure our app cares for those carers.”
Nerida Packham, a pharmacist and Medicine Line team manager at NPS MedicineWise says the app will give carers more confidence that they have a central place to hold medicines and health information, as well as helping improve medicine routines and management.
“The app supports people to better keep track of their medicines, which may reduce medication mix-ups,” she told Community Care Review.
“Sometimes medicines can have unexpected or undesirable side effects but keeping an accurate list of medicines can help a health professional find the cause of the problems.”
NSW families, communities and disability services Gareth Ward said the government was pleased to work with NPS MedicineWise to develop the app in the interests of supporting quality use of medicines.
“I’m thrilled the NSW Government has been able to help improve the app and make the role of carers easier and more efficient,” he said in a statement.
