Dedicated support service delivers hearing advice

A new website and national helpline has been launched to support Australians experiencing hearing loss.

Hearing Help is an initiative of Australian Hearing which allows people to complete a hearing test online and access impartial hearing advice and support from hearing clinicians.

The Federal Minister for Human Services Alan Tudge launched the interactive support service during Hearing Awareness Week (21 – 27 August).

Gina Mavrias, chief operating officer with Australian Hearing, said the free support service aimed to make hearing advice convenient and easily accessible to all Australians.

People can browse the website for resources, ask for help through the online chat functionality, or call the helpline to speak directly with a hearing specialist, she said.

“We can help people wanting information on hearing related conditions, such as tinnitus. We can share knowledge on the most technological advances on hearing devices, or help someone wanting to know how to get a hearing check. We’re also a convenient option for those living in rural or remote areas where there might be less access to a GP.”

The resource also targets family members and carers wanting information, tips and support on hearing health for their loved ones.

The website includes practical information and advice on topics such as discussing hearing problems, what to expect when wearing a hearing aid and what to look for when choosing a hearing aid.

It is estimated that one in six Australians have some form of hearing loss and this number is expected to rise to one in four people by 2050.
