Residents welcome new friend
Aged care residents got to know an AI robot when it dropped in for a visit.

A group of 10 residents at Kew Gardens Aged Care have engaged with a robot that visited the home and connected with them through quizzes, trivia, music, and Tai Chi.
The AI robot named Abi was selected to illustrate the potential of robots to revolutionise care environments and help human caregivers in delivering high-quality, personalised attention.

Managing director of Australian Aged Care Group John Matthies welcomed the robot positively.
“Our residents were captivated by Abi’s visit, especially her ability to lead engaging activities like trivia and Tai Chi,” Mr Matthies said. “Seeing their smiles and hearing their laughter as they interacted with her was truly heartwarming.”
Abi the robot has been designed by Andromeda as a social and cognitive support tool for both group activities and building personal relationships.
The robot’s arrival aims to provide individualised engagement to foster companionship and reduce isolation.

Mr Matthies said the robot’s capability to interact in Korean with a staff member really impressed residents.
“Abi’s warmth and responsiveness sparked some fun interactions, showing just how technology can enhance companionship and engagement in aged care,” he said. “As far as Abi returning goes – yes! Kew Gardens plans to introduce regular 30-minute one-on-one sessions between Abi and residents during 2025.”
